Rainy Volkswagen Castrol round Cup at Red Bull Ring

On 24 and 25 of August at the Red Bull Ring track in Spielberg, Austria, the fifth round of Volkswagen Castrol Cup was held. The competition was attended by 24 drivers from eight countries, featuring VIP drivers – speedway world champion Tomasz Gollob, who made a great debut at the wheel of a race car, and Szczepan Mroczek – editor of the Polish edition of „Top Gear” magazine. The winner of the first race was Mateusz Lisowski, who started from pole position. First place in the second race also belonged to a Pole – Maciej Steinhof. After a weekend at the Red Bull Ring in the lead of the overall cup classification stays driver from Wieliczka, Mateusz Lisowski. Both races were very exciting, also thanks to Push – to – Pass system that increased the power of racing Golfs by an additional 50 bhp.

After a two-month break in Volkswagen Castrol Cup, drivers returned to competition at the Red Bull Ring circuit, picturesquely placed venue in the Austrian town of Spielberg. The track was built in 1969, and during the following years it visited the Austrian round of Formula 1 World Championship. The track has a length of 4326 m, 8 corners, and the longest straight is 525 meters long. The single lap record belongs to Michael Schumacher and was established in 2003. German driver needed 1:08:337 min. to cover one lap in his Ferrari F1 2003.

In the overall standings, after four rounds, Mateusz Lisowski was on the lead with total amount of 266 points. Jakub Litwin (256 points) was in the second place, and the third was a Swede Rasmus Marthen (251 points). Jan Kisiel, who held fourth place, also announced fight for the podium. In the Austrian round there were 24 drivers on the grid. Among them were VIP drivers – Tomasz Gollob and Szczepan Mroczek. The first one is the most successful and one of the most popular speedway riders. Gollob has to his credit individual titles of World Champion, Team World Champion and multiple Individual Polish Championship. For him, this was the first contact with a race car, but nevertheless not the first start in other competitions than speedway. In his free time, Tomasz Gollob with successes starts in motorcross racing. Szczepan Mroczek is an experienced journalist, editor of the Polish edition of „Top Gear” magazine.The new participants also joined the pack of drivers. They were Pawel Krezelok – indoor karting championship runner-up and youngest woman on the grid, having raced in the British Formula 4 – Malgorzata Rdest.

Qualifications

Qualifications for the first race of the fifth round of Volkswagen Castrol Cup began on Saturday 24th August at 17:25. For the first few minutes the best individual result belonged to Rasmus Marthen. This result, however, were quickly beaten by Mateusz Lisowski, who for the third time this season, won the pole position with a time 1:47.321. Polish drivers dominated the qualifying session. The second was Jan Kisiel, who lost to Lisowski only 0.057 s. Malgorzata Rdest made sensational debut setting the third time. The fourth was Jakub Litwin, and the fifth fastest time was scored by Maciej Steinhof. Rasmus Marthen and Marcus Fluch gained sixth and seventh place respectively. Among the two VIP drivers Szczepan Mroczek (17th) was faster than Tomasz Gollob (19th place).

First race

The first race started on August 25th at 11:20, and it was first wet race in the season. Mateusz Lisowski used his starting position and increased his lead just from the start. Behind him there was a fight for every position, which despite the difficult conditions on the wet track, was fierce to the end. Lisowski won, followed by Robertas Kupcikas and Marcus Fluch. Malgorzata Rdest performed very well in her first start in Volkswagen Castrol Cup. She reached finish in 5th position. Tomasz Gollob, starting as a VIP driver also showed his driving skills – he reached the finish line in 16th place. The second VIP – automotive journalist Szczepan Mroczek was 20th.

The second race

Competition in the second race started exactly at 15:25 with the constantly falling rain. Results of the first race established the order in which drivers lined up at the start of the second race. From pole position started Martin Wirkijowski. Right behind him lined up Maciej Steinhof, Rasmus Marthen and Gosia Rdest. Winner of the first race Mateusz Lisowski was on the eighth pole. Right after the start Wirkijowski was overtaken by Steinhof. Driver from Cracow was building-up his lead with every lap. On the second lap Aleksandra Furgal went off the track, seriously damaging her car and the one which Szczepan Mroczek drove. For both of them it was the end of the race, and the track safety went to the track. After the race was restarted there was Lisowski and Kupcikas who were overtaking other competitors. Eventually they crossed finish line in this order, just behind Maciej Steinhof. Once again, Malgorzata Rdest did well and took 12th place. Tomasz Gollob finished in 20th position.

The fastest lap time during the rainy race belongs to Lithuanian Robertas Kupcikas, who won otoMoto.pl award for fastest lap. His time was 1:58:564.

The results of both races in Austria meant that Mateusz Lisowski strengthened his lead in the overall cup classification. Behind Lisowski (374 pts.) is the Swede Rasmus Marthen, who scored 315 points so far. Right behind him is Jan Kisiel, who with 311 points is just one point ahead of Jakub Litwin.
